Adopt an object: Sponsor a Viking artefact at the Yorkshire Museum

The Yorkshire Museum has launched a new fundraising programme – ‘Adopt an Object’. The programme provides the opportunity for annual sponsorship of some of the incredible collections from the recently opened Viking North exhibition.

It offers the chance to connect with both the collection at the Yorkshire Museum and the history of Yorkshire in new and exciting ways.

All proceeds received from the new scheme are reinvested directly back into York Museum Trust collections, buildings and gardens, to care for the places and objects and ensure their preservation for future generations.

Those who choose to adopt an object will be given a personalised adoption certificate to thank them for their generosity.

Incredible star objects, such as the newly acquired Thor’s Hammer Pendant, are available to adopt.

The pendant, a small silver hammer featuring a gold hammer inlay, is a particularly unique find for North Yorkshire and sheds light on expressions of faith in Viking society.

It is the first time this object has ever been on public display and is a remarkable part of the exhibition.

Also available for adoption is the Coppergate Helmet. This Anglo-Saxon helmet was discovered beneath Coppergate in York and is an incredibly well-preserved piece of armour prior to the arrival of the Vikings.

Other remarkable objects in the collection such as the Viking Silk Cap, Bone Plaque, Ormside Bowl and several pieces of important stonework make up the 14 different objects available to choose from. A full list can be found on the Yorkshire Museum website. https://www.yorkshiremuseum.org.uk/adopt-an-object/

There is no limit on how many people can adopt a single object, allowing the opportunity for everyone to choose their favourite Viking artefact. ‘Adopt an Object’ also makes the perfect present, with gifting options available to suit history enthusiasts of all ages.

Viking North is included in your general admission ticket to the Yorkshire Museum and is open, Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-5pm.
