Celebrate the spirit of Yorkshire this Friday 1 August, with fun festivities and exciting events happening in York to commemorate the day.
There’ll be giant Yorkshire puddings, dancing sheep, a concert on the Ouse, special screenings, artisan markets, and more. Take a look at our guide below.
Yorkshire Day was first celebrated in 1975, by the Yorkshire Ridings Society, and became an official event in 1985.

Yorkshire Day at York Maze

Yorkshire Day celebrations at York Maze will start at 1pm with the traditional Yorkshire Pudding tossing competition. The child and adult with the biggest throws will be crowned winners. Then at 2.45pm as the finale to the Yorkshire Day celebrations Yorkshire-Man, clad in his traditional yellow and green lycra suit and flat cap, will be leaping into the giant Yorkshire Pudding filled with gravy! Everyone visiting York Maze on Yorkshire Day wearing a flat cap will be offered a complimentary mug of freshly brewed Yorkshire Tea.

Women of York film screening on Yorkshire Day

Come and celebrate Yorkshire Day with a free screening of our short film about the history of women in York! Working in collaboration with the Yorkshire Film Archive, Professor Anne-Marie Evans, Dr Elodie Duché, and Professor Brendan Paddison are proud to present the Women of York film, which commemorates and celebrates the way women have impacted our city.
