Police called to another emergency on Whitby cliffs

Emergency services were called to Whitby cliffs again last night (Sunday).

Officers were responding to a safety report for a man aged in 30s on the East Cliff of Whitby at 3.46pm.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Security staff initially talked to the man and then police officers attended the scene along with paramedics, the fire service, and the coastguard as a precaution.

“At 6.55pm, the man was detained for his own safety and is now receiving the care that he needs.”

The incident comes after a series of tragedies in the Whitby area.

Police are investigating the deaths of a man and a woman below Whitby cliffs last Wednesday, the death of a woman below Whitby Abbey on Thursday and a woman’s body found below the cliffs behind Sandsend car park on Saturday.

Police say those three incidents are not connected.
