The incident began on the evening of Friday 1 August, when a man in his 60s was walking home from the pub in the Market Place area. He was then attacked by the dog near the local bowling club.

The man contacted police at 10.50pm to report the attack. Officers located the dog near the fire station at around 11.30pm and made several attempts to bring it under control. During this time, a police officer was also bitten.

The dog managed to get away and was eventually found at around 1:30am on Saturday on Queen Annes Drive, off Firby Road.

Due to concerns for public safety and with a vet due to take 25 minutes to arrive, a decision was made for a firearms officer to put the dog down.

Both the injured man and police officer were treated in hospital for bite wounds and received tetanus jabs.

Witnesses to the incident or anyone with information have been asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting reference NYP-01082025-0637.
