The latest heatwave of the summer is set to peak in York today (Wednesday), with temperatures rising to 32°C.
A yellow heat health alert remains in place for York and North Yorkshire.
Forecasters expect cooler but still warm conditions tomorrow, with weekend temperatures around 24°C.
Marco Petagna, meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “It will be another warm and hot day with maximum temperatures of 33C to 34C, highest in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.
“On Thursday there will still be a few showers, particularly in the north, and it will not be quite as hot.”
The latest heatwave, the fourth of the summer so far, prompted the UK Health Security Agency and the Met Office to issue a heat warning on Tuesday.
Dr Paul Coleman, consultant in public health at UKHSA, said: “These kind of temperatures can result in serious health outcomes across the population – particularly in those who are vulnerable, such as the elderly or those with serious health conditions – so it is important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.”
Yorkshire Water, which has imposed a hosepipe ban, says reservoir stocks dropped over the last seven days to 42.2%, well below the average of 74.8%, and the lowest they have ever been at this time of year.
And the fire service has issued advice today too.
North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service urged people to take care near water. It posted: “Open water can still be cold, even on a hot day. Cold water shock can seriously affect your ability to swim.
“Always enter the water slowly to acclimatise, don’t jump straight in.”
And to prevent wildfires, like the big blaze they tackled on Langdale Moor near RAF Fylingdales yesterday, the service urged people to “take your litter home especially glass bottles and jars, and only use barbecues or campfires in designated areas”.
