A York theatre group are bringing a ‘moving and unusual’ award-winning musical to York.
Pick Me Up Theatre are getting ready to stage Fun Home at York Medical Society on Stonegate. The show received massive critical acclaim when it ran on Broadway, winning five Tony awards including Best Musical.
Fun Home is at York Medical Society from Wednesday 10 to Friday 19 September.
Fun Home is based on the best-selling graphic novel by American artist Alison Bechdel, telling the story her own life. When her father dies unexpectedly, Alison dives deep into her past to recall the brilliant, one-off, but volatile man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life.
Moving between past and present, she relives her unique childhood playing at the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father’s hidden desires.
Director Robert Readman said he was thrilled when the rights to Fun Home became available. “I jumped at the chance to produce this amazing musical – it is such a moving and unusual story and I love the score and the book.
“We are very lucky to have such a magnificent, tight cast. And I feel this atmospheric, very intimate venue will work so well for this production.”
The character of Alison will be played by three different actresses, to portray different stages of her life: Hattie Wells as Young Alison, Libby Greenhill as Medium Alison, and Claire Morley as adult Alison.
The cast is completed with Catherine Foster, Dale Vaughan, Teddy Alexander, Oliver Smith, Britney Brett, and Cain Branton. The musical director is Natalie Walker.
Tickets for Fun Home start from £15 and are available online here.
