‘Gem’ of a York village pub to get new look

A pub described as a ‘little gem in a lovely village’ is set to get a new look.

The Wenlock Arms in Wheldrake is to be spruced up under plans submitted to City of York Council.

It will get a new colour scheme and signage under the proposals.

The ground floor whitewash on the exterior of the pub will be given a more colourful makeover, and a number of new signs will be added – see below.

A pictureboard including a coat of arms will replace the lettering on the first floor.

The Wenlock Arms, on Main Street in Wheldrake, is known as a traditional country pub selling real ales and serving an extensive food menu.

Part of the Stonegate Group, it reopened under new management in June 2024. Adam Atkinson and partner Josie Cundliffe said they took over after “falling in love” with the Wenlock Arms.

On TripAdvisor it has a 4.1/5 rating. One recent diner described it a ‘little gem of a pub in a lovely Yorkshire village’.

Another said it was a ‘perfect country pub’.
