Roads closed and holiday parks evacuated as moor fire spreads

Roads near Langdale Moor have been closed today as the fire has spread.

The blaze has flared up again as it enters its third week. It has spread to an estimated 2,000 acres at the North York Moors National Park near Fylingdales

A number of roads are closed, both due to the dangers of smoke and to allow emergency services full access.

A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson said today: “The fire spread last night on Fylingdales Moor and there is a lot of smoke in the area.

“We would ask people affected by smoke to keep doors and windows closed.

“We have nine appliances plus special appliances at the scene and partner agencies are assisting with drones.”

A number of holiday parks are also either being evacuated or on alert to be evacuated.

All steam engine services on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway are also on pause due to the Langdale Moor fire.

A spokesperson said: “We have taken this decision to avoid putting additional pressure on the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Our thoughts are with all those working hard to fight the fire, and keep us all safe.

“In the meantime, our heritage diesel fleet is running on the planned timetable, so you can still enjoy your journey through the moors with us.”

Moorland organisation video

This video update is from the North York Moors Moorland Organisation.

They wrote on Facebook: “Our gamekeeper has sent me this video footage of what they are dealing with. The gamekeepers have been trying to back burn the fire to stop it spreading further, while the fire brigades and local farmers have been continuing to bring under control the current wildfires.

“With the wind direction changing it is not helping the efforts to bring the fire under control.

“A massive well done to all involved in continuing to work and bring this wildfire under control but this will be rumbling on for some time yet.”

Malton and Thirsk MP Kevin Hollinrake said this on social media: “I am concerned to hear about the wildfire spreading near Fylingdales and Langdale Moor.

“North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, supported by neighbouring brigades, farmers, gamekeepers and a helicopter, have attended the scene since it was first reported earlier this month.

“Residents nearby are advised to keep doors and windows closed and avoid travelling to the area.”
