Police rescue dog suffering distress in hot car in York

Police broke into a car to rescue a dog in distress as temperatures climbed yesterday (Wednesday).

When neighbourhood officers were called to the incident, they found the car “parked in full sun at the time and the dog showing clear signs of distress, panting heavily and clearly suffering from the intense heat inside the vehicle”.

Unable to contact the owner, the officers decided to break a rear window to rescue the dog.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesperson said: “Knowing this was an emergency and unable to locate the owner, the team made the decision to break a rear window to rescue the dog.

“Thanks to their rapid response, the animal was freed, offered water, before being moved to a cooler location where they made a quick recovery.”

They added: “Even when it’s a mild 22°C outside, the interior of a car can reach a lethal 47°C within an hour putting dogs at severe risk of heatstroke and sadly, many animals die in parked cars every year.”
