Opening date revealed for long-shut York pub

Opening date revealed for long-shut York pub

A new plan to revive a long-shut York pub has been revealed – and this time we have a date for its reopening.

Gibsons on Micklegate closed in December 2019.

Since then, YorkMix has reported on a series of attempts to reopen what was a very popular venue for many years.

Star Pubs and Bars – the leased pub business of Heineken UK – won planning permission to refurbish it inside and out in September 2023.

And additional plans to change the former first floor office to create a private dining room and to add a kitchen preparation area on the second floor were given the green light last December.

But a separate proposal to rename and rebrand the pub Three’s A Crowd were withdrawn in April.

Now though, Star Pubs says the refurbishment – previously said to cost £280,000 – will take place this autumn.

A Star Pubs spokesperson told YorkMix: “We can confirm that a sympathetic refurbishment of Gibsons is scheduled to start in September, with the pub reopening in October.”

They are again advertising for new managers for Gibsons.

The website says: “The planned refurbishment by Star Pubs will see Gibsons transformed into a stylish premium pub with the ability to appeal to a varied customer base, including tourists, locals, and students and further boost the potential of the pub.”

Built in 1861 as a town house, the three-storey building was converted into a licensed premises four years later.

Previous owners Jon Bon Gibson and Lee Wilkinson revealed it was going to close in December 2019, saying they were ready to move on, after enjoying “amazing times” at the pub.
