Watch: York honours King’s birthday with a very nearly 21-gun salute

York marked the King’s official birthday with bands and bangs today (Saturday).

But not everything went entirely to plan.

The British Army Band of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment paraded through the city centre and then played in Museum Gardens.

Military cadets also took part in the event.

Jo Ropner, the Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire – the Sovereign’s representative in the county – was a guest of honour.

Then, at midday, it was time for the 21-gun salute. York Museum Gardens is one of only nine official saluting stations in England, and the only one not in the south.

Three guns were positioned pointing towards the River Ouse, ready to fire 21 rounds between them.

But for once, it didn’t go with military precision. Number two gun failed after three rounds, so numbers one and three took up the slack.

Then number three gun failed to fire the very last round. So for once it was a 20-gun salute.

But we don’t expect the King minded very much.
